Level of difficulty

Level of difficulty

🌊 Catheak categorization programs at difficulty level

In order to make it clear to each participant, the programs are divided as follows:

🔹 Intro – Introduction to Kayakning (1 of 4)

Programs in lakes, dams and other so-called calm waters. Suitable for people without previous experience who want to take their first steps in kayaking and feel the boat and water movement in a fully controlled environment.

🔹 Beginners (2 out of 4)

Programs for people with small or initial experience. No high level of physical endurance is required, but participants must be able to spend at least one hour in the kayak. The focus is on adaptation to the sea, basic equipment and water confidence.

🔹 Medium advanced (3 out of 4)

Good physical endurance and basic experience in sea kayaking is required. Participants must be able to row over an hour without stopping, including in the presence of wind up to 3 bft. The programs include longer transitions and more dynamic conditions.

🔹 Advanced (4 out of 4)

Programs for people with a high level of personal rowing skills. Stable kayak control is expected, confidence in various maritime conditions and ability to deal with the challenges of the open sea.

🌊 Summary

The level of difficulty in sea kayak hikes is a dynamic assessment. It depends on the sea, the route and the people in the group. Therefore, the well-planned route is not just „easier “ or „more difficult “, but suitable for the specific experience and specific participants.

🌊 How to determine the level of difficulty of sea kayaking transition

The level of difficulty in sea kayaking transition is not determined only by the kilometers traveled. It is a comprehensive assessment that combines natural, technical and human factors. It is this combination that makes each route unique and requires professional planning.

When we talk about the difficulty of kayaking programs, the assessment includes water conditions, the duration of rowing, the necessary skills and the level of independence of participants.

1. Distance and daily load

The distance remains a baseline indicator, but is always considered in context. A short route on the high seas can be significantly more difficult than a long transition along a protected coast. Consecutive days of rowing – accumulated fatigue also matter significantly affects overall difficulty.

2. Maritime conditions

This is the key factor in sea transitions.
The strength and direction of the wind, height and period of the wave, as well as the opposite currents and reflections from the rocky shore, are assessed. The same kilometers in a quiet sea and in a side wind with excitement are a completely different experience.

3. Route type

Routes differ significantly in nature – from protected coastal areas, through open sections between noses and islands, to long hikes without the possibility of landing. The longer the section remains exposed to the high seas, the higher the difficulty.

4. Technical requirements

The difficulty rate increases when the route requires precise kayaking control in excitement, control in a side and counterwind, stability in a surf and safe exit of different types of coast. This is no longer just about physical endurance, but about real rowing skills.

5. Navigation and orientation

More complex hikes include orientation on coastal landmarks, planning against meteorological windows and real-time decision making. Navigation adds intellectual load and requires experience, concentration and tranquility.

6. Standby and logistics

The farther from civilization is the route, the higher the difficulty. Transitions with limited access to beaches, without easy evacuation and in need of self-management of equipment and resources, require serious training
