If you want to be part of a true sea adventure and paddle around an island whose shores seem to glow in turquoise, then Diaporos is a place that will inevitably captivate you.

Located in the bay of Vourvourou, on the Sithonia peninsula, the island is only a few minutes from the shore, yet it feels like entering a separate, self-contained world – calm, vivid, and almost unreal.

Its coastline is richly indented, dotted with dozens of small bays, natural channels, and sandy spits where the water is shallow, crystal-clear, and warm. The sea around it shifts from light turquoise shades to deep blue, creating one of the most impressive colour palettes in the Aegean Sea.

Thanks to its sheltered geographical position, the bays around Diaporos are almost always calm, without waves and with minimal swell — ideal conditions for sea kayaking, training, and free exploration.

The event is four days long, but if you do not have enough time, you may join us one day later without missing the essential part of the experience.

What to expect:

✅ Full four days of sea kayaking around Diaporos Island
✅ Paddling in some of the most turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea
✅ Complete circumnavigation of the island
✅ Discovering lagoons, rock corridors, and natural channels
✅ Small islets and secluded beaches accessible only by kayak
✅ Calm sea without waves – ideal for beginners and training

✅ Swimming and snorkelling in turquoise and crystal-clear waters
✅ Evenings in traditional tavernas and sunsets by the sea
✅ Overnight camping with all amenities

✅ Professional guides and training

Diaporos is one of the most captivating places in the Aegean Sea – an island where nature has combined turquoise waters, fine white sands, and curious granite formations into a harmony rarely found even in Halkidiki.

Located in the sheltered bay of Vourvourou, Diaporos offers unique tranquility: shallow, warm waters, no waves, and numerous natural lagoons accessible only by kayak.

Its coastline is diverse and rich – dozens of small coves, sandy spits, hidden channels, and secluded beaches where the sea takes on almost unreal shades of blue. Among them stands out the Blue Lagoon – a famous shallow channel between Diaporos and the small island of Agria, known for its crystal-clear water, bright sands, and characteristic turquoise glow. It is one of the most popular spots for swimming and snorkelling in the area.

Inside the island and around the shallow areas, natural “inner seas” are formed – calm, sheltered water spaces ideal for training and improving sea kayaking technique.

Programme:

Arrival in Ormos Panagias and first encounter with Diaporos

The meeting is at 05:30 in front of Vasil Levski Stadium, and at 06:00 we depart from Sofia.

Our first stop is in the Kresna area – time for pastries, supplies, and water before continuing along the route to the Aegean coast.

Around noon we arrive in Ormos Panagias. We stop for coffee and breakfast, buy fresh fish from the local fish market, and head to Rea Camping, located directly opposite Diaporos Island.

All together we unload the equipment and kayaks, set up the camp, and after a short rest we conduct the initial briefing.

We then head to the first beaches of Diaporos Island. The day is dedicated to training and improving the basic paddling techniques to confidently prepare for the upcoming routes.

Shortly before sunset we return to the campsite. In the evening we light the barbecue, prepare dinner, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere by the sea.

Paddling distance for the day: around 6 km

Difficulty level according to distance: 1 out of 4

Islets, lagoons, and the rhythm of Talgo

This is the day when the participants who chose the three-day adventure join the group. To take part fully, they must arrive at the campsite no later than 09:30, complete the briefing, and receive their equipment.

Today we will explore the coastline north of the campsite.

Our first stop is a sandy beach located across from a small rocky island with a chapel built literally in the water — one of the most iconic and peaceful places in the area, and one of the most photogenic spots on the route.

Next stop — lunch at the beach taverna in Ormos Panagias, where we will recharge and enjoy the view of the bay.

In the afternoon we continue toward the cult Talgo Beach. We will visit the famous Talgo Beach Bar, and the rhythm of the DJ parties will create an atmosphere unlike any other on Sithonia.

In the evening, we may light the barbecue again or visit the campsite taverna.

Paddling distance for the day: around 14 km with three breaks

Difficulty level according to distance: 2 out of 4

The circumnavigation of Diaporos and the Blue Lagoon

After breakfast and coffee, as well as preparing sandwiches for the day, we launch the kayaks and head towards Diaporos Island. Today we will complete a full circumnavigation of the island, and during the breaks we will enjoy sandy beaches and swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea.

Three breaks are planned.

The first one is on the southeastern beach of Diaporos — a quiet and peaceful spot, ideal for swimming and a short rest.

The second break is at the Blue Lagoon — the most iconic place in the northeastern part of the island. Here the water is emerald, the seabed is bright and shallow, and the colours are almost unreal. This is also the most visited area, so we will take a longer break here and have lunch.

Please note that there are no cafés or tavernas on the island — you must bring enough food and water for the entire day.

We continue the circumnavigation, and the third break is in the interior of the island, where we will leave the kayaks and take a short hike to a small emerald beach overlooking the Blue Lagoon — one of the most beautiful panoramic spots on Diaporos.

For the evening we plan an organised dinner in a traditional taverna in Vourvourou, where we will end the day with good food and a seaside atmosphere.

Paddling distance for the day: around 14 km with three breaks

Difficulty level according to distance: 2 out of 4

We meet at 09:30 at the boats.

This is our last day and it is dedicated to short, focused paddling and practical training in the bay of Rea Camping. We stay close to the bay, where we continue to build on the most important techniques in sea kayaking.

Today’s training includes

Basics and kayak control

✅ proper entry and exit from the kayak at shore and shallow water;

✅ efficient forward and backward paddling with correct body positioning;

✅ stopping techniques and controlled speed reduction;

✅ adjusting and changing direction.

Maneuvering and stability

✅ side paddling (draw stroke);

✅ maintaining stability through low brace and high brace;

✅ basic techniques for preventing capsizing.

Rescue techniques

✅ self-rescue – re-entering the kayak after falling out;

✅ assisted rescue – helping another kayaker.

The training is carried out mainly on single sea kayaks so that each technique can be performed realistically, with proper dynamics and safety.

Those who prefer not to participate in the practical exercises may observe from a boat or remain on the beach.

Wrap-up, preparation, and departure

At 11:30 we return to the campsite. Together we clean the equipment, organise the gear, wash and load the kayaks onto the trailers.

Around 15:30 we depart, making a short stop in Nikiti for gyros, after which we continue our journey back to Bulgaria.

Estimated arrival in front of Vasil Levski Stadium in Sofia – around 23:00.

Paddling distance for the day: short training segments in the bay.

Difficulty level according to distance: 1 out of 2.

How to get to Rea Camping?

You can travel completely free of charge with us using the transport vehicles we use for transporting the kayak equipment, until the 16 available seats are filled, or you may travel with your own transport if you prefer.

Participants who have chosen our exciting three-day adventure arrive by their own transport and must be at the campsite no later than 09:30. Please respect the time — the group departs exactly on schedule, and if you are late, you risk missing the entire first day of the programme.

🌊 Kayak Program Difficulty Classification

To make things clear for every participant, our programs are categorized as follows:

🔹 Intro – Introduction to Kayaking (1 of 4)

Programs held on lakes, reservoirs, and other so-called calm waters. Suitable for people with no prior experience who want to take their first steps in kayaking and feel the boat and movement on water in a fully controlled environment.

🔹 Beginners (2 of 4)

Programs for people with little or initial experience. A high level of physical endurance is not required, but participants should be able to spend at least one hour in the kayak. The focus is on adapting to the sea, basic technique, and building confidence on the water.

🔹 Intermediate (3 of 4)

Good physical endurance and basic experience in sea kayaking are required. Participants should be able to paddle for more than one hour without stopping, including in conditions with wind up to 3 bft. These programs include longer crossings and more dynamic conditions.

🔹 Advanced (4 of 4)

Programs for paddlers with a high level of personal paddling skills. Solid boat control, confidence in varied sea conditions, and the ability to handle challenges of open water independently are expected.

🌊 Summary

The difficulty level of sea kayak trips is a dynamic assessment. It depends on the sea, the route, and the people in the group. A well-planned route is not simply “easy” or “hard,” but appropriate for the specific experience and the specific participants.

🚣‍♂️ Dopamine Team – where difficulty is not a barrier, but part of the experience.

🌊 How the Difficulty Level of a Sea Kayak Trip Is Determined

The difficulty of a sea kayak trip is not defined only by the distance covered. It is a complex evaluation that combines natural, technical, and human factors. This combination is what makes each route unique and requires professional planning.

When we assess the difficulty of kayak programs, we take into account water conditions, paddling duration, required skills, and the level of participant self-reliance.

1. Distance and Daily Load

Distance remains a basic indicator, but it is always considered in context. A short route in open sea can be significantly more demanding than a long paddle along a sheltered coastline. Consecutive days of paddling are also important, as accumulated fatigue greatly affects overall difficulty.

2. Sea Conditions

This is the key factor in sea kayaking. Wind strength and direction, wave height and period, as well as currents and reflections from rocky shores are all evaluated. The same distance in calm water versus side wind and swell can be a completely different experience.

3. Route Type

Routes vary greatly in character – from sheltered coastal sections, through open crossings between capes and islands, to long stretches without access to shore. The longer a section is exposed to open sea, the higher the difficulty.

4. Technical Requirements

Difficulty increases when a route requires precise kayak control in waves, handling side and head winds, stability in surf, and safe landings on different types of shoreline. Here the challenge goes beyond physical endurance and into real paddling skills.

5. Navigation and Decision-Making

More complex trips involve coastal navigation, planning around weather windows, and making decisions in real time. Navigation adds mental load and requires experience, focus, and calm judgment.

6. Self-Reliance and Logistics

The farther a route is from civilization, the higher the difficulty. Trips with limited beach access, no easy evacuation, and the need for independent management of equipment and resources require serious preparation.
