The Kalamos & Kastos kayak adventure takes us to one of the quietest and most authentic parts of the Ionian Sea – small islands without crowds, surrounded by crystal-clear waters, wild beaches, and coastlines that truly reveal themselves only from the sea.
We begin in Mytikas and head towards Kalamos Island, paddling along green hillsides, hidden coves, and peaceful seaside villages. One of the highlights is the circumnavigation of the uninhabited island of Formikoula – a protected nature reserve with sea caves, secluded beaches, and deep blue waters, perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
We continue to Kastos – a small, tranquil island where time seems to slow down. Here we paddle around the island, stop in sheltered bays, and end each day at the harbor with dinner by the sea. On the final day, we return to the mainland after four full days of paddling, exploration, and island life.
This is an expedition for those seeking crystal-clear waters, tranquility, and a true sea kayaking experience far from mass tourism – few words, endless water, and a genuine sense of freedom.
Program:
On the evening of 22.07.2026, we meet in front of Vasil Levski Stadium at 22:00, with departure from Sofia scheduled for 22:30.
Our first stop will be in the Kresna area, where we will have time to stock up on food and water before continuing our journey.
First Kilometers Between the Mainland and Kalamos Island
We arrive early in the morning in Mytikas – a small coastal town located opposite the islands of Kalamos and Kastos. Mytikas is a peaceful harbor with an authentic Ionian atmosphere, fishing boats, small cafés, and views of the open sea. Time moves slowly here, making it the perfect place to begin our sea kayaking adventure.
We stop for breakfast and coffee, after which we unload the kayaks and equipment together. We organize our luggage so that everything needed for the adventure is distributed among the kayaks. A detailed briefing follows, along with the distribution of equipment – we prepare ourselves for the sea and begin.
The day is planned as a gradual introduction to the area and the route.
Beginners remain in the sheltered bay, where they will receive their first sea kayaking lessons – basic paddling techniques, kayak control, and paddle handling. Afterwards, they gradually paddle towards the capital of Kalamos Island at a relaxed pace and in safe conditions.
The more experienced paddlers head left along the coastline and begin their first real exploration of the shore. Our first stop is the small village of Paliovarka – a quiet place, almost invisible from land, nestled between green hillsides and the sea. Here we take a short break and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the area.
We continue towards Mikri Agrilia Beach – a small, wild beach with crystal-clear water, surrounded by lush greenery and rocky cliffs. This is a place rarely visited from land and is ideal for a longer break, swimming, and our first true encounter with the wild side of the Ionian Sea.
After the break, all groups gradually come together and head towards Kalamos Island. We arrive by kayak at the island's capital – a small, picturesque village with a waterfront promenade, traditional houses, and cozy taverns right by the sea.
We check into our guest house. The evening is dedicated to exploring the village and having dinner at one of the local taverns – fresh fish, Ionian cuisine, and the feeling of discovering a place that lives by its own rhythm.
The first day is easy, relaxed, and designed to help everyone adapt to the sea, the kayaks, and the group. The true magic of Kalamos and Kastos is only just beginning.

The Wild Side of Kalamos and Formikoula Island
After a relaxed breakfast on Kalamos Island, the real sea adventure begins. Today we paddle through areas where nature still sets the rules and human presence is almost unnoticeable.
We launch the kayaks and head along the coastline. Our first stop is a small wild beach near Porto Leone – a naturally sheltered bay with deep, crystal-clear water. The rocky shoreline and complete silence create the feeling of being far away from the modern world. It is the perfect place for our first break, a swim, and to settle into the rhythm of the day.
After a short stop, we continue towards the small uninhabited island of Formikoula – one of the highlights of the entire journey.
Formikoula is a protected nature reserve that captures your attention from the very first sight. The island is a true mosaic of rock formations, small beaches, sea caves, and untouched wildlife. Here, nature has been left entirely on its own.
We will explore the island both by kayak and on foot. We will paddle into sea caves, land on small beaches, and climb the rocks to admire the turquoise bays from above. For those who wish, there will be opportunities for cliff jumping into the deep, crystal-clear water, along with plenty of time for swimming, snorkeling, and exploring the underwater world. This is not a place that you simply visit—it is a place to experience through movement, curiosity, and adventure.
Here we take a longer break and enjoy lunch, allowing ourselves to fully immerse in the atmosphere of the island, far from civilization and noise.
In the afternoon, we paddle back towards Kalamos, following a different line along the coast. We stop for a break at Agrapidia Beach – a small, peaceful beach with fine pebbles and deep blue water. The green hills surrounding it and the absence of crowds make it the perfect place for one last swim and a chance to recharge before the final stretch of the day.
We return to Kalamos in the late afternoon. The evening is free – a walk through the village and dinner at a local tavern with fresh fish and Ionian specialties. For those interested, a short walk above the harbor offers beautiful views of the sunset and the neighboring island of Kastos.
Paddling distance for the day: approximately 20 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 4 out of 4
After breakfast and coffee, we set off by kayak towards Kastos – a small, peaceful island that has preserved the atmosphere of the Ionian Islands before the arrival of mass tourism. The day is dedicated to pure paddling, wild coastlines, and the choice between a longer or a more relaxed route.
First stop – Greenwell Beach
A small, secluded beach with fine pebbles and remarkably clear water. The shoreline is sheltered and peaceful, making it the perfect place for our first break, a swim, and settling into the rhythm of the day. From the water, the beautiful coastline and the characteristic Ionian blue unfold before us.
Next stop – Παραλία Άγιος Αιμιλιανός (Agios Emilianos Beach)
A wide, tranquil bay surrounded by green hillsides and rocky cliffs. Here we take a longer break – a place for true relaxation, extended swimming, and time without rushing. The bay is ideal for snorkeling and observing the underwater landscape.
Sea Cave – Σπηλιά Φωκότρυπα (Fokotrypa Cave)
One of the island's most fascinating natural formations. We carefully paddle into the cave, where the light reflects in beautiful shades of blue and green. It is a place that conveys the feeling of raw nature and ancient silence – the kind of moment that remains in your memory long after the adventure ends.
We continue past several small islets along the coast, making the route even more scenic, before landing at the main harbor of Kastos. Here we enjoy lunch, take a longer break, and soak up the peaceful atmosphere of the village – a handful of taverns, fishing boats, shade, and the sea always within reach.
Afternoon – the choice is yours
- Full circumnavigation of the island – for those looking for more distance and a true expedition feeling. Total paddling distance for the day reaches 22 km.
- Return along the same route – a more moderate option with a total of 14 km of paddling, equally rich in beautiful scenery and calm stretches of coastline.
In the late afternoon, we return once again to Kastos for a well-deserved rest. The evening is peaceful – time for a walk, conversations, and dinner while the sea becomes calm and the island is bathed in the soft light of the sunset.
This is the day when Kastos reveals its quiet, authentic beauty – no noise, no crowds, just the sea, boats, and time.
Paddling distance for the day: 22 km / 14 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 4 out of 4 / 3 out of 4
Kalamos → Mytikas: Final Paddle and Return
After breakfast and coffee, we check out of the guest house, organize all our luggage, and load the equipment into the kayaks – today everything we need travels with us on the water. We head left along the coast of Kalamos for the final sea crossing of our adventure.
First stop – Παραλία Ασπρογιάλι (Asprogiali Beach)
Asprogiali is a classic Ionian beach – bright pebbles, deep crystal-clear water, and the feeling of the open sea. Its name means “White Shore,” and it describes the place perfectly. It is a peaceful, natural spot for our first break, a swim, and the final photos from Kalamos.
Agios Donatos
We continue along the coastline, passing the area of Agios Donatos – a place associated with a small chapel and the remains of old buildings. From the water, traces of the island's past can still be seen, blending into the steep hillsides and rocky landscape.
Above us – the ruins of Kastromonástēro
Shortly afterwards, our attention turns upward as Kastromonástēro towers high above the coastline. The ruins of this fortified monastery/castle stand dramatically above the sea, reminding us of the times when the island had to defend itself against pirate raids. From the kayak, the view is truly impressive – cliffs, history, and the sea captured in a single scene.
Lunch and a walk – Episkopi
We land in the small village of Episkopi – a quiet, authentic place with the atmosphere of mainland Greece. Here we stop for lunch and a longer break, stroll through the village, and enjoy one final pause away from the rhythm of paddling.
Final stretch – back to Mytikas
In the afternoon, we paddle the final section back to Mytikas. Together, we clean the equipment, load the kayaks onto the trailers, and bring the sea part of our adventure to a close.
Then we begin the journey back to Sofia – tired, salty, satisfied, and carrying that unique feeling that only comes after spending several unforgettable days entirely on the water.
This is the finale of Kalamos & Kastos – islands without pretension, a sea without crowds, and an adventure that never rushes.
