Kefalonia is one of the most spectacular islands in Greece, renowned for its rugged beauty, deeply indented coastline, and remarkable natural wonders that can hardly be experienced in a single journey. The island gained worldwide recognition through the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin, yet its true magic is discovered far from the movie scenes—where the sea meets the cliffs.
Covering an area of 781 square kilometers, Kefalonia offers extraordinary diversity: iconic white-pebble beaches, underground and sea caves, towering cliffs, deep bays, and authentic fishing villages. To experience the island in its entirety, our routes are planned across different sections of the coastline, with daily transfers by vehicle and kayak trailer to a new starting point.
Our paddling does not begin from the campsite. Every day we organize transfers to different launch sites around the island. This allows us to explore a much larger part of the coastline and reach places that would otherwise remain inaccessible. The routes require well-planned logistics and paddling through a variety of coastal environments, transforming the adventure into a demanding, dynamic, and exceptionally rewarding sea kayaking experience.
Kefalonia is far more than a kayaking route—it is a complete sea adventure that combines exploration, movement, and the opportunity to discover one of the most remarkable islands in the Ionian Sea.
Program:
Departure
On the evening of 18.08.2026, we meet at 20:30 in front of Vasil Levski Stadium in Sofia.
At 21:00, we depart for Greece and the beginning of our sea kayaking adventure on the island of Kefalonia.
Our first stop will be in the Kresna area, where we will have time to stock up on food and drinking water before continuing our journey.
Arrival in Kefalonia and the Island's Underground Wonders
In the morning, we arrive in Vasiliki (Lefkada Island) and take the ferry to Kefalonia. After disembarking, we head to Camping Karavomilos, where we check in, unload the kayaks and equipment, and take a short break after the journey.
Later in the day, we visit one of the island's most iconic natural wonders – Melissani Cave, also known as the Cave of the Nymphs. Discovered in 1951, the cave is approximately 3.5 km long and consists of two main chambers. One is dark and filled with impressive stalactites, while the other features a large opening in its ceiling, allowing sunlight to illuminate the underground lake with magical shades of blue. The cave has an underground connection to the sea, making its water salty. According to Greek legend, this was the resting place of the nymph Melissani, who drowned herself in the lake after the god Pan failed to return her love.
Our second stop of the day is Drogarati Cave, discovered in the early 18th century after a powerful earthquake. The cave is estimated to be millions of years old and measures approximately 95 meters in length and 45 meters in width. Its most impressive feature is the enormous chamber known as the "Hall of Exaltation," covering around 900 square meters. It is renowned for its extraordinary acoustics and magnificent formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The acoustics were famously tested by Maria Callas herself, and following her visit, Drogarati Cave became a venue for concerts and cultural events. Local legends also tell that dragons once lived inside the cave, giving rise to its name.
In the evening, we return to the campsite for dinner and relaxation—a gentle transition into our first night on the island of Kefalonia.
Discovering Kefalonia from the Water
We begin our paddle from Spasmata Beach, located close to the airport. From the very first minutes, we will watch airplanes taking off and landing low above the sea—an unusual and memorable sight that marks the beginning of our adventure.
We head to the right from the beach. Today is an introductory day, carefully designed so that everyone can paddle at their own pace. The group will be divided into two levels.
Beginners will learn the fundamentals of sea kayaking—basic paddling techniques, kayak control, and safe movement along the coastline.
The more experienced paddlers continue farther ahead to explore the longer and more exciting sections of the coastline.
Our first stop is at a breathtaking sandy beach framed by towering vertical cliffs. From there, we continue past sea caves, wild and remote beaches, while the final destination for the advanced group is Saint Theodore Lighthouse—an iconic landmark offering magnificent panoramic views over the Ionian Sea.
After mastering the basic techniques, the beginners will paddle to one of the sea caves before returning to the starting point.
The day is moderate in distance but exceptionally rich in scenery and memorable experiences.
In the evening, everyone is free to choose between dinner at the campsite or at a traditional tavern along the waterfront promenade.
Important: There are no restaurants or taverns along today's route, so everyone should bring sufficient food and drinking water for the day.
Paddling distance for the day: approximately 14 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 3 out of 4
Myrtos Beach and the Limestone Cliffs of Southern Kefalonia
Today we take an organized transfer to the southern part of the island and begin paddling from Myrtos Beach. Without a doubt, Myrtos is one of the most beautiful beaches in Kefalonia, having received numerous awards for its pristine waters and outstanding natural beauty. It is considered one of the top 10 beaches in Greece and is frequently ranked among the world's 30 most beautiful beaches by international travel publications. The towering white limestone cliffs, the contrast with the turquoise sea, and the overwhelming sense of scale make an unforgettable first impression from the moment we launch our kayaks.
Our first destination is the large sea cave known as "Papanikolis", where we will make our first stop before continuing towards the small fishing harbor of Agia Kyriaki. Along the route, we will also take a short break at one of the untouched and secluded beaches hidden beneath the cliffs.
Our main break and lunch will be at the waterfront tavern in Agia Kyriaki Harbor – a peaceful location, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the authentic maritime atmosphere.
After lunch, we paddle back along the same route to Myrtos Beach, completing one of the most scenic days of our sea kayaking adventure in Kefalonia.
The evening is free. You may enjoy dinner at the campsite or choose one of the taverns along the waterfront promenade, according to your preference.
Paddling distance for the day: approximately 16 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 3 out of 4
The Technical Side of Kefalonia: Cliffs, Sea Caves, and Wild Beaches
Today we make another transfer—this time to the beach below the village of Zola. From here we head to the right of the small harbor, entering one of the most spectacular and technically demanding coastal sections of the island.
The day is dedicated to refining our sea kayaking skills. The coastline is deeply indented, with numerous rocky outcrops, sharp limestone ridges, and narrow passages that require precise kayak handling, careful line selection, and working with the reflections of the waves. Towering limestone cliffs rise above us, giving the route its dramatic and rugged character—the wild face of Kefalonia at its finest.
Along the way we will visit several of the most beautiful and least accessible beaches on the island, places that are almost impossible to reach by land:
Kamari Beach – a small, secluded beach with white pebbles and deep sapphire-blue water. Surrounded by towering cliffs, it creates a feeling of complete isolation and tranquility.
Fteri Beach – one of Kefalonia's most iconic wild beaches. A long crescent-shaped shoreline embraced by vertical cliffs, with exceptionally clear water and dramatic scenery. From the sea, the view is even more breathtaking than from land.
Amidi Beach – a smaller, lesser-known beach hidden between the cliffs, featuring brilliant turquoise waters and an atmosphere of untouched wilderness.
We continue past the Ageredes Caves, a series of sea caves and rocky chambers sculpted by the sea over thousands of years. We will paddle into several of them, explore their interior spaces, and enjoy the magical interplay of light and water.
Our final destination for the day is the headland beyond the caves, where we enter a large sea cave—the highlight of today's route. After a break and time to explore, we paddle back to Zola along the same route, where the changing light and sea conditions often reveal completely new perspectives on the return journey.
⚠️ There are no restaurants or taverns along today's route, so everyone must bring sufficient food and drinking water for the entire day.
In the evening, we head to the island's capital, Argostoli, for a stroll and dinner. We will also visit the famous De Bosset Bridge, which connects the town to the opposite shore and is one of Kefalonia's most significant landmarks.
The De Bosset Bridge is 689.9 meters long and was built in 1813, making it the longest stone bridge over the sea in the world. Besides its architectural significance, it also plays an important role in shaping the nearby Koutavos Lagoon.
Close to the bridge stands the four-sided obelisk known as The Column, while the lagoon itself is now a protected natural reserve and an important nesting area for Caretta caretta sea turtles.
A leisurely walk through Argostoli and dinner by the waterfront provide the perfect and relaxing conclusion to another unforgettable day of exploration.
Paddling distance for the day: 16 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 3 out of 4
We meet at 09:00 and, together, pack up all the equipment, wash the kayaks, and load them onto the trailers. Afterwards, we take the ferry to Lefkada. We will enjoy a late lunch or an early dinner at a traditional tavern in Vasiliki before beginning our journey back to Bulgaria.
Expected arrival in front of Vasil Levski Stadium is around 23:00.
Plan B
Kefalonia is an island with dramatic terrain and an exposed coastline, where stronger winds and waves may occasionally affect our planned routes. In such cases, the day's itinerary may be adapted according to the actual sea conditions.
The good news is that the island's deeply indented coastline offers numerous sheltered areas. This allows us to choose a suitable alternative paddling route whenever necessary, without compromising the quality of the experience or the diversity of the scenery.
