This Lefkada expedition is designed as a continuous, multi-day sea crossing, where each day completes a real section of the island. We do not return to the starting point but move forward – from beach to beach, from cape to cape, from one wild coastline to the next overnight location.
The route passes through iconic locations such as Egremni, Porto Katsiki, Cape Lefkatas, the sea cave systems of Lefkas Caves and Papanikolis Cave, as well as lesser-known wild beaches and small sheltered coves. The western coastline welcomes us with vertical cliffs and deep water, while the southern and eastern parts offer more protected sections and island crossings toward Meganisi.
The expedition requires good organization and physical readiness, but it is balanced in a way that allows time for breaks, swimming, snorkeling, and truly experiencing the places we pass through. Overnight stays are on beaches, at campsites, or near settlements, and evenings often end in small tavernas or by the sea.
This is not a tourist tour, but a sea route with character, revealing Lefkada as it can only be seen from a kayak.
Program:
Departure
On the evening of 23.06.2026, the meeting point is at 22:00 in front of Vasil Levski National Stadium in Sofia, and at 22:30 we depart for Greece.
Our first stop is in the Kresna area, where we will have time to stock up on food and water before continuing the journey.
The western coast of Lefkada: first kilometers on open sea
After our arrival on Lefkada and breakfast, we head to Paralia Agios Ioannis – a wide, open beach on the western coast, known for its steady breeze, long sandy stretches, and characteristic windmills. Here we unload the kayaks, distribute the equipment, and conduct a detailed briefing. This is a logical starting point for an expedition along the western coastline – direct contact with the open Ionian Sea from the very first day.
After the briefing, we launch the kayaks and head south.
First break – Tsoukalades Beach
Tsoukalades is a wild, rocky beach located beneath high clay and limestone cliffs. Access by land is limited, which keeps the area relatively quiet. The water here is deep and crystal clear, with the intense turquoise color characteristic of western Lefkada. This is an ideal spot for the first break, swimming, and adapting to open-coast conditions.
Lunch – Agios Nikitas
We continue toward Agios Nikitas – one of Lefkada’s most iconic settlements. A small fishing village nestled between the mountain and the sea, with narrow streets, stone houses, and a lively yet compact waterfront. We land near the beach and have lunch at a taverna, allowing time for a longer rest before the next open-sea section.
Afternoon break – Avali Beach
After Agios Nikitas, our route leads to Avali Beach – a wider beach with a mix of fine pebbles and sand, open to the sea but with natural landing areas. Avali is favored for its relaxed atmosphere, good underwater visibility, and smooth transition from shore to depth. Here we stop for swimming, a short rest, and to regain energy.
End of the day – Gialos Beach
The final stretch takes us to Gialos Beach – a long, open beach set against a dramatic backdrop of high vertical cliffs. This is a typical western Lefkada landscape: vast sea, powerful coastal lines, and a strong sense of openness. Here we finish paddling for the day.
We have dinner on the beach, and the overnight stay is directly by the sea. There is a beach bar on site, which enhances the atmosphere and allows the day to end calmly, without unnecessary movement.
Paddling distance for the day: approximately 22 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 4 out of 4
Egremni, Porto Katsiki and Cape Lefkatas
After breakfast and coffee, we continue our expedition south along one of the most dramatic coastlines in the Ionian Sea. Today is a day filled with iconic beaches, open sea, and strongly defined coastal relief.
First stop – Egremni Beach
Our first break could not be anywhere else – Egremni Beach. This is one of the most famous and imposing beaches not only on Lefkada, but in all of Greece. The beach stretches for more than 2 kilometers, with fine light-colored sand and the characteristic sheer white cliffs of the western coast, rising hundreds of meters above the sea.
From the water, the view is even more impressive – a long, almost endless strip of sand framed by raw and monumental terrain. We stop for rest, swimming, and time to truly feel the scale of this place.
Lunch – Porto Katsiki
After Egremni, we continue toward Porto Katsiki – a beach that has become a symbol of Lefkada. Set beneath steep limestone cliffs, it impresses with its striking contrast between white rock, turquoise water, and deep blue sea.
We land near the beach and stop for lunch, allowing ourselves plenty of time to rest. This is a place that looks different from every angle, but reveals its purest form when seen from a kayak.
Rounding Cape Lefkatas Lighthouse
After lunch, the route becomes more rugged and exposed. We head toward Cape Lefkatas (Cape Doukato) – the southernmost point of the island. This is a place with powerful energy, where the Ionian Sea opens fully and the coast rises steeply above the water.
The lighthouse stands atop high white cliffs that drop almost vertically into the sea. Here, the water is often more dynamic, and wave reflections from the cliffs create challenging conditions that require focus and solid paddling technique. Rounding the cape is the climactic moment of the day.
Break – Plaka Beach by the Monastery
After the cape, we stop to rest at Plaka Beach, located below a small monastery. This is a quieter, pebbly beach with a wild, natural character – surrounded by vegetation, rocks, and largely untouched by mass tourism. An ideal spot for a short pause, swimming, and recovery after the exposed section.
Final destination – Vasiliki
In the late afternoon, we arrive in Vasiliki – a sheltered bay and one of the liveliest places in the southern part of Lefkada. Here we finish paddling for the day and enjoy dinner at a seaside taverna. The calm atmosphere of the bay is a sharp but pleasant contrast to the wild western coastline we have just passed.
Paddling distance for the day: approximately 22 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 4 out of 4
The wild southeastern coast of Lefkada
We have breakfast in Vasiliki and early in the morning we are back on the water. Today takes us along the southeastern coastline of Lefkada – an area that is significantly quieter, less populated, and filled with small bays, wild beaches, and exceptionally clear water. It is a long and demanding day, with almost continuous paddling, but we are rewarded with variety and tranquility.
Break – Orfanogianni Beach
Our first stop is Orfanogianni Beach – a small beach that is difficult to access by land, with a pebbly shore and remarkably clear water. The area is wild and well preserved, without facilities or infrastructure, making it an ideal place for a short break, swimming, and complete disconnection from civilization. From the water, the beach looks even more raw and authentic – typical for this part of the island.
Lunch – Ammoussa Beach
We continue toward Ammoussa Beach, one of the most pleasant and well-balanced beaches along the route. It is a relatively small bay with a pebbly shore, clear water, and a calm atmosphere. Here we will have lunch and enjoy a longer rest. Ammoussa is well protected from the wind and is an excellent spot for recovery before the afternoon section of the journey.
Afternoon stop – Lagkadaki Beach
After lunch, we paddle north and stop at Lagkadaki Beach – a small, exceptionally beautiful beach nestled between the rocks. The place is known for its turquoise water and strong sense of seclusion. The beach is covered with small pebbles, and the water drops quickly into depth, making it ideal for swimming and a short rest later in the day.
Break – Afteli Beach
We continue to Afteli Beach – one of the more popular, yet still very pleasant beaches in the area. The bay is well sheltered, with extremely clear water and a small beach bar. Here we will take an afternoon break, enjoy refreshments, and allow ourselves one last longer rest before the final section of the day.
Final stop – Paralia Mikros Gialos
In the late afternoon, we arrive at Paralia Mikros Gialos – a long, calm beach with fine pebbles and a gently sloping seabed. The bay is well protected and suitable for an overnight stay. Here we will have dinner at a seaside taverna and spend the night, finishing a long, intensive, and exceptionally beautiful day on the water.
Paddling distance for the day: 20 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 4 out of 4
Caves, islands, and a return to civilization
After breakfast, we depart from Paralia Mikros Gialos and enter one of the most impressive sections of the route. The day is dedicated to sea caves, wild coastlines, and the transition from the raw shoreline toward the calmer waters around Meganisi.
Lefkas Caves – the marine cathedral of Lefkada
Our first stop is the Lefkas Caves – one of the island’s major natural landmarks. This is a system of massive sea caves carved into white limestone cliffs, with high vaults and wide entrances that allow entry by kayak. Inside, the light refracts into various shades of blue and green, and the reflections on the walls create a sense of movement and depth. The sea here is often deeper and darker, making the experience even more impressive.
After the caves, we land on a small wild beach nestled between the rocks – a place without paths or infrastructure, ideal for a short break, swimming, and recovery.
Crossing toward Meganisi and Papanikolis Cave
We continue toward the island of Meganisi, entering more sheltered waters. Here we find Papanikolis Cave – one of the most famous sea caves in the region. The cave has an exceptionally large entrance and a spacious interior, allowing easy entry and maneuvering with a kayak. Its name comes from the legend that a Greek submarine was hidden inside during World War II. The water is light, almost milky blue, and the acoustics amplify every sound, creating a strong sense of scale and depth.
Here we will have lunch and rest, with time for swimming and exploring the cave from the water.
Final kilometers and overnight stay
After lunch, we take another short break on a wild beach, then continue toward Camping Santa Maura, where we will spend the night. This provides a smooth and relaxed ending to the day after the long crossing and the rich impressions.
In the evening, we head together to Nidri, where we will stroll along the seaside promenade and have dinner at a local taverna – a fitting conclusion to a day filled with caves, islands, and wide marine horizons.
Paddling distance for the day: approximately 16 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 3 out of 4
