The eastern coastline of Pelion is one of the most impressive and least accessible areas for sea kayaking in Greece. The mountain rises sharply above the sea, while the beaches are hidden beneath steep slopes and high cliffs. This is exactly what makes them difficult to reach by land and ideal for exploration by kayak.
The region is rich in mythology and history – the land of the centaurs, the home of the wise Chiron, the place from which the Argonauts set out in search of the Golden Fleece. Today, this “rough diamond” remains far from mass tourism, especially along its eastern side.
Our main route follows an expedition-style line along the eastern coast – from Horefto, through Papa Nero and Damouchari, to Katigiorgis. In case of unfavorable weather conditions, the route can be adapted – we round the southern cape and enter the more sheltered waters of the Pagasetic Gulf, towards Milina and Horto. Both options reveal exceptionally beautiful coastlines and offer opportunities to combine sea kayaking with hiking routes.
The beaches where we will camp and from which we will start are east-facing – this means several consecutive sunrises over the Aegean Sea, quiet mornings, and a sense of complete detachment from everyday life.
This adventure is not just kayaking.
It is movement across mythical land, waking up by the sea, paddling beneath mountain slopes, and days in which time ceases to matter.
Program:
The meeting is at 22:30 in front of Vasil Levski National Stadium, with departure from Sofia at 23:00.
Our first stop is in the area of Kresna – time for pastries, supplies, and water before continuing along the route toward Volos.
Horefto → Papa Nero
In the morning we arrive in Horefto and, after a short break, we all unload the kayaks and equipment together. This is followed by a reorganization of the luggage – everything needed for the following days must be packed and stowed in the kayaks, as from this point on we will be fully self-sufficient on the water.
We conduct a briefing, check the equipment, and launch the boats. The day is dedicated to a first encounter with the eastern coastline of Pelion and adaptation to the sea, the terrain, and the physical load.
We paddle along the coastline to the right of Horefto, following the rocky shore with its first small coves and beaches characteristic of the area. After about an hour, we head south. The pace is moderate, with time for breaks, swimming, and gradually settling into the rhythm of the expedition.
Our final destination for the day is Papa Nero Beach, where we will stay overnight at the campsite of the same name, located directly on the shore.
In the evening, we head to the village for dinner at a traditional tavern and a calm first evening by the sea.
Paddling distance for the day: 12 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 2 out of 4.
Through the wild heart of eastern Pelion
In the morning we pack up the camp, organize everything, and load the equipment back into the kayaks. From this moment on we are fully in expedition mode – everything we need travels with us on the water. After a short preparation, we head south, following the eastern coastline of Pelion.
From the very first kilometers, the coast begins to reveal its true character – a sequence of wild beaches, rocky headlands, and green slopes descending directly into the sea. In places, the coastline is completely inaccessible by land, and this is precisely what makes paddling here so special.
Wild beaches and the Pelion atmosphere
Along the route we will pass numerous small coves with fine pebbles and exceptionally clear water. Some of the beaches are shaded, with pine trees reaching almost down to the sea, while others feature small beach bars and family-run taverns, where, at the right moment, we may stop for lunch and a break. This is Pelion at its best – simple, natural, and welcoming.
The monastery and cave at Fakistra
In the afternoon we reach one of the most impressive places along the entire route – the area of Fakistra. Here the coast becomes wilder and more mystical. We will reach a coastal monastery and a small church nestled among the rocks and greenery, after which we will enter the cave, accessible only by water.
Fakistra Beach itself is a true natural wonder – a narrow strip of dark pebbles above which a waterfall descends directly from the cliffs. The contrast between greenery, stone, and turquoise water creates the feeling of a place outside of time.
Damouchari – cinema, sea, and mountain
We continue toward Damouchari – one of the most magnetic villages in Pelion. The small stone harbor, old boats, and authentic architecture are well known from the film “Mamma Mia,” which was filmed right here. Damouchari is a place that combines a rugged sea with a cozy atmosphere and is a natural stop for rest and recharging.
From here begins the famous hiking trail to Tsagarada – a route that climbs into the mountain and reveals impressive panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the entire eastern coast.
End of the day
When we decide that the paddling for the day is sufficient, we will choose a suitable wild beach for rest, dinner, and overnight stay. The evening unfolds calmly – by the sea, with the sound of the waves, a sense of freedom, and that special tranquility that Pelion offers to those who reach it by water.
Paddling distance for the day: approximately 14–16 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 3 out of 4
Wild and rugged Pelion
After breakfast and coffee, we pack up the camp and head back onto the water. Today we enter one of the most dramatic and powerful sections of eastern Pelion – a place where the sea and the rocks are in a constant, timeless dialogue.
Our first destination for the day is Potistika Beach – a wide, open beach with dark sand and gravel, framed by steep green slopes. Potistika is known for its raw character, deep water, and strong sense of openness. Here the sea often shows its power, with waves breaking against the shore with a deep, resonant sound. There is a tavern on the beach where we will have lunch, restock with water and food, and take time to rest before the more technical part of the day.
After lunch we continue south toward Melani Beach – an even wilder and more striking place. The beach is smaller, more enclosed, and highly evocative with its rocky forms and steep cliffs. This is where some of Pelion’s most iconic natural formations are found – two rock pillars rising directly from the sea. They stand like stone guardians, shaped by waves and time, and are among the most photogenic and recognizable natural features along this coastline. Paddling around them is a true experience – a play of reflections between water, rock, and light.
After Melani we continue toward Paltsi Beach – a more accessible and slightly wider beach that often serves as a natural stop along this route. Here the landscape changes again – fewer vertical cliffs, more open space, and calmer sections suitable for a short break and regrouping.
From here we continue further south, following the coastline. The day is not bound to a specific final destination – the conditions, the rhythm of the group, and the sea itself will guide us. When we feel that the paddling for the day is sufficient, we will choose a suitable wild beach for the finale.
The evening is once again far from civilization – dinner by the sea, calmness, the sound of the waves, and the feeling that we are exactly where we are meant to be. We spend the night on a wild beach, under the open sky or in tents, with Pelion behind us and the Aegean Sea stretching out in front.
Paddling distance for the day: approximately 18 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 4 out of 4
Finale along the wild coast of Pelion
After breakfast and coffee, we pack up the camp and continue south. Today’s day is smooth, long, and exceptionally beautiful – a sequence of beaches with very different characters, each with its own atmosphere. Our final destination is Camping Kastri Beach, but the journey itself is the true richness of the day.
Our first stop is Παραλία Λύρη (Lýri Beach) – a small, hidden beach with fine gravel and remarkably clear water. It is surrounded by green slopes and rock formations, making it sheltered and intimate. The place is quiet, almost always deserted, and perfect for a morning swim and a short pause while the sea is smooth like glass.
We continue toward Theotokos Beach – a wider beach with a rocky shore and deep, dark-blue water. Here Pelion shows its harsher side – steep cliffs, an open horizon, and a strong sense of space. This is a beach that is felt more than it is “used” – a place for a brief stop, a deep breath, and contemplation.
Next comes Paralia Agios Georgios – one of the most pleasant stops of the day. The beach is more accessible, with a combination of pebbles and sand, and the water is calm and crystal clear. Here we will take a longer break and have lunch at an excellent seaside tavern, known for its fresh fish, seafood, and typical Pelion cuisine. This is a moment for recharging – both physically and emotionally.
After lunch we head back onto the water and make our way toward Vromoneri Beach – a wild and slightly more rugged beach whose name comes from the freshwater springs in the area. Here the sea often shows different color nuances, and the shore is a mix of stones and rocks. The place is raw, authentic, and deeply evocative – classic Pelion, far from any tourist image.
The last stop before the finale is Paralia Glaros – a small, quiet beach that seems to prepare the senses for the end of the day. Sheltered, with clear water and a calm atmosphere, it is ideal for a final swim and a short pause before completing the crossing.
In the early evening we arrive at Camping Kastri Beach – our final point for the day. Here we will spend the night and have dinner. The beach is wide, with an open view toward the Aegean Sea, and the campsite offers exactly what we need after the long day – calm, shade, warm food, and a sense of completion.
The evening is quiet and well deserved. The sea is in front of us, the day lies behind us, and the expedition slowly settles into its final rhythm.
Paddling distance for the day: approximately 18 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 4 out of 4
