Pelion – Myths and Legends - 5 Days Sea Kayak Adventure
Pelion is one of those rare places in Greece where nature, history, and mythology intertwine in a way that can be felt from the very first glance at the coastline. The mountain descends steeply into the Aegean Sea, forming a dramatic shoreline of towering cliffs, dark blue depths, and small coves hidden between dense forests and rocky ridges.
According to ancient Greek legends, Pelion is the land of the centaurs – the place where the wise Chiron, teacher of Achilles and Jason, once lived. It was from these shores that the Argonauts set out on their journey in search of the Golden Fleece. Even today, this coastline carries a feeling of raw power and antiquity – wild, untouched, and authentic.
Our five-day kayak adventure begins with two days in the Gulf of Volos and two days along the eastern coast of Pelion – a part of the peninsula that remains far from mass tourism and is best experienced from the water. We will paddle beneath towering cliff walls, enter small coves with deep crystal-clear water, and reach beaches where people rarely set foot and only by boat.
The route is carefully balanced. Daily paddling distances are adapted to the terrain, sea conditions, and the abilities of the group, leaving enough time for swimming, rest, and fully experiencing the place. Pelion is not a backdrop for rushing through – it is a landscape that requires attention, silence, and respect.
Accommodation is at Camping Olizon. There are no overcrowded beach bars or noisy resorts here – only stars, waves, and conversations that continue late into the night.
Pelion is an adventure for people seeking more than beautiful scenery – for those who want to feel the sea up close, move in rhythm with it, and become part of a landscape that has remained almost unchanged from ancient times to the present day.
Program:
The meeting point is at 23:30 in front of Vasil Levski Stadium, with departure from Sofia at 24:00.
Our first stop will be in the Kresna area – time for pastries, supplies, and water before we continue along the route towards Volos.
First Encounter with Pelion
We arrive and settle in at Camping Olizon, located very close to the coastal village of Milina – a peaceful place nestled between green hills and the Aegean Sea. In the village, we will have breakfast and feel the first rhythm of Pelion – slow, maritime, and authentic.
After breakfast, we unload the equipment and kayaks. A short break follows, then a briefing, equipment distribution, and an introduction to the route and conditions. The day is planned as an introduction – both to the sea and to the boats and the group.
We divide the group into two. The advanced paddlers will make a circuit around the island opposite the campsite, while with the beginners we will conduct an introductory session and practice the basic techniques for handling a sea kayak. After that, we all set off together in calm waters towards our first stop – Olive Beach – a small, sheltered beach with Pelion’s characteristic stony shoreline and exceptionally clear water. Here we continue with practical training and refinement of the basic techniques.
The next part of the route takes us to a series of wild, rarely visited beaches hidden between the rocks and green slopes. This is the ideal beginning of the adventure – moderate pace, time for swimming, breaks, and a gradual immersion into the character of eastern Pelion.
In the late afternoon, we return to the campsite. The evening is dedicated to rest and unwinding – dinner at the campsite or at a tavern in Milina. The barbecue is available for participants. It is worth noting that there is no fish shop in the village, but there is a butcher shop with excellent meat, and local vendors regularly pass through offering fresh fish directly from their vehicles – part of the authentic rhythm of the area.
Paddling distance for the day: 12 km

Islands, Silence, and Traces of the Past
After breakfast, we launch the kayaks and set out across the turquoise-ink waters of the Aegean Sea. The day is dedicated to paddling through open water, island silhouettes, and a feeling of complete isolation from land.
Our first break is on Alatas Island – a small, peaceful island with clear waters and a wild character. Here we will pause for swimming, rest, and a short recovery before continuing along the route.
Shortly before reaching our next destination, we will enter a sea cave located in the rocks near the island. The entrance into the cave is brief but memorable, revealing the raw and untouched character of this part of Pelion.
After that, we continue towards a nearby islet where the remains of a well-preserved medieval monastery are located. The place carries a strong sense of history and seclusion – stone walls, silence, and a view towards the endless sea. Here we will have lunch and time for exploration and rest.
After lunch, we continue by paddling around Alatas Island from its opposite side. In the late afternoon, we return back to the campsite.
It is important to note that there are no restaurants or taverns along the route on this day, so everyone should carry the necessary food and water for the entire day.
The evening is free. We return to the campsite for dinner and rest – time to unwind, talk, and gather strength for the next days of the adventure.
Paddling distance for the day: 14 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 2 out of 4
The Eastern Coast of Pelion
Today is entirely devoted to the sea. If the swell and wind allow, we organize a transfer to Paltsi port – the starting point for one of the most technical and interesting sections along the coast of Pelion.
From Paltsi, we head north, following the rocky and deeply indented coastline. Our final destinations for the day are Melani and Potistika beaches. The distance is relatively short – no more than 6 km, but this is one of the most challenging routes of the entire adventure.
The coast here is filled with rocky headlands, narrow passages, and rock formations that require precise maneuvering, good technique, and full concentration. The more experienced paddlers will move between rocks and stone ribs, work with the wave and its reflections from the shore, and choose every line carefully. This is sea kayaking in its pure form – technical, dynamic, and highly engaging. Of course, all participants will wear helmets.
Beginners will observe from the calmer sections, with that slight envy that gives birth to motivation – and will wait for the moment when they too will be able to move confidently through such terrain.
Melani Beach welcomes us with an open, raw character – dark sand and gravel, high slopes, and deep water that changes its behavior sharply depending on the conditions. Potistika Beach, located a little further on, is even more impressive with its scale and dramatic relief. These are places that are not “conquered” but experienced – with respect and attention.
On one of the two beaches, we will take a longer break for recovery, swimming, and route analysis. Lunch will be at a tavern on the beach, after which, depending on the conditions, we return along the same route.
After the paddling is complete, we head high into the mountain towards the village of Argalasti, where we will end the day with dinner in a traditional tavern known for its local cuisine. The stone architecture and peaceful atmosphere of the village are the natural counterpoint to an intense day spent on the water.
Paddling distance for the day: 12 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 3 out of 4
After the intense previous day, we return once again to the eastern coastline of Pelion. If sea conditions allow, we organize another transfer to the port of Paltsi, but this time we head to the right, along a route with a different character and new challenges.
From Paltsi, we paddle south towards Παραλία Μουρτιά (Paralia Mourtia) – a picturesque beach located in a well-shaped bay, with clear water and the characteristic rocky shoreline of Pelion. The place combines tranquility and raw beauty, while the bay often offers more protected conditions compared to the open sections.
Opposite the beach lies an area with interesting and technical rock formations that we will carefully navigate around. Here the coastline is deeply indented, with rocky ribs, small channels, and sections suitable for technical maneuvering and working with the waves. This is terrain that allows practicing control, line selection, and precise movement close to the rocks, while maintaining full safety.
At Mourtia Beach, we will take a longer break for swimming, recovery, and lunch. There may be no operating taverns or shops along the route, so it is important for everyone to carry their own food and enough water for the entire day.
After the break, we return along the same route back to Paltsi, once again carefully monitoring the conditions and the group’s pace. The day is balanced – shorter distance, but focused on technique, calmness, and quality time on the water.
In the evening, we return to Milina, where we will end the day with dinner at a traditional tavern. The maritime atmosphere, simple local dishes, and the peaceful rhythm of the village are the perfect ending to another fulfilling day along the shores of Pelion.
Paddling distance for the day: 12 km
