While autumn begins to settle over Bulgaria—with cooler mornings, shorter days, and the first signs of changing seasons—the southern parts of Greece are still living in the full rhythm of summer. Pelion is one of those rare places where the end of September is not an ending, but a continuation—quieter, gentler, and even more beautiful.
Situated between the mountains and the Aegean Sea, the Pelion Peninsula offers naturally pleasant daytime temperatures and warm seawater that often remains above 25°C. The sea stays crystal clear and inviting for swimming, the air is mild and stable, and the waters are generally calmer and more predictable than during the height of summer. It is that special time when summer does not disappear—it simply slows its pace.
Our sea kayaking adventure during this season reveals Pelion at its very best. The beaches are quieter, the mountain trails are filled with the scent of pine trees and ripe figs, and the secluded bays welcome us without crowds or noise. Paddling becomes more rhythmic, more reflective—without the intense heat of August, yet still filled with all the energy of summer.
We will paddle beneath the mountains where lush forests descend directly to the sea, explore small coves with deep sapphire-blue waters, and land on beaches that feel even wilder and more authentic at this time of year. The days remain pleasantly long, the sunlight becomes softer, and the evenings are perfect for relaxed conversations beside the sea.
Autumn in Pelion is not a compromise—it is the luxury of an extended summer. It is the perfect destination for those who are not yet ready to say goodbye to the sea, but are looking for a quieter, deeper, and more authentic experience. This is the season when the Aegean still feels like summer while the rest of the world is already thinking about autumn.
Program:
We meet at 23:30 in front of Vasil Levski Stadium, and at 24:00 we depart from Sofia.
Our first stop is in the Kresna area—time for pastries, supplies, and water before continuing our journey towards Volos.
Your First Encounter with Pelion
We arrive and check in at Camping Olizon, located just a short walk from the seaside village of Milina—a peaceful place nestled between lush green hills and the Aegean Sea. Here we enjoy breakfast and experience our first taste of Pelion's slow, authentic maritime rhythm.
After breakfast, we unload the kayaks and equipment. Following a short break, we gather for the safety briefing, equipment distribution, and an introduction to the routes and local conditions. The day is designed as an orientation session—allowing everyone to become familiar with both the sea and the group.
We divide into two groups. The more experienced paddlers complete a circuit around the small island opposite the campsite, while beginners take part in introductory sea kayaking instruction, practicing the fundamental techniques of kayak control. Afterwards, everyone paddles together through calm waters to our first stop—Olive Beach, a small sheltered beach with Pelion's characteristic pebble shoreline and exceptionally clear water. Here we continue with practical training and further develop the essential paddling techniques.
The next section of the route takes us past a series of wild, little-visited beaches hidden between rocky headlands and green hillsides. It is the perfect introduction to the adventure—a relaxed pace, plenty of opportunities for swimming and breaks, and a gradual immersion into the unique character of eastern Pelion.
In the late afternoon, we return to the campsite. The evening is dedicated to relaxation—dinner at the campsite or in one of Milina's traditional taverns. The barbecue is available for all participants. It is worth noting that although there is no fish market in the village, there is an excellent butcher's shop, and local fishermen regularly sell freshly caught fish directly from their vehicles—part of the authentic rhythm of life in the area.

Islands, Silence, and Traces of the Past
After breakfast, we launch the kayaks and set off across the turquoise and deep-blue waters of the Aegean Sea. The day is dedicated to paddling through open water, passing island silhouettes, and enjoying the unique feeling of complete isolation from the mainland.
Our first stop is Alatas Island—a small, peaceful island with crystal-clear waters and an unspoiled natural character. Here we take a break for swimming, relaxation, and a short rest before continuing our journey.
Shortly before reaching our next destination, we paddle into a sea cave hidden within the coastal cliffs. Although the visit is brief, it is an unforgettable experience, revealing the rugged and untouched nature of this part of Pelion.
We then continue towards a nearby islet, home to the remains of a remarkably well-preserved medieval monastery. The place has a powerful sense of history and solitude—ancient stone walls, complete silence, and endless views across the sea. Here we stop for lunch and have time to explore and relax.
After lunch, we continue our route by paddling around the opposite side of Alatas Island before returning to the campsite in the late afternoon.
Please note that there are no restaurants or taverns anywhere along today's route, so everyone must bring enough food and drinking water for the entire day.
The evening is free. We return to the campsite for dinner and relaxation—a chance to unwind, share stories, and recharge for the adventures ahead.

The Eastern Coast of Pelion
Today is entirely dedicated to the sea. If the wind and sea conditions allow, we organize a transfer to the harbor of Paltsi—the starting point for one of the most technical and fascinating sections of the Pelion coastline.
From Paltsi, we paddle north, following the rugged and deeply indented shoreline. Our destinations for the day are Melani Beach and Potistika Beach. Although the paddling distance is relatively short—no more than 6 km—this is one of the most challenging routes of the entire adventure.
The coastline here is filled with rocky headlands, narrow passages, and dramatic rock formations that demand precise maneuvering, good technique, and complete concentration. More experienced paddlers will navigate between rock gardens and narrow channels, working with the waves and their reflections from the cliffs while carefully choosing the best lines. This is sea kayaking in its purest form—technical, dynamic, and highly engaging. Of course, all participants will wear helmets throughout this section.
Beginners will observe from calmer areas—with that familiar spark of inspiration that comes from watching more advanced paddlers, while looking forward to the day when they, too, will move confidently through such terrain.
Melani Beach welcomes us with its raw, untamed beauty—dark sand and pebbles, towering cliffs, and deep water whose character changes dramatically depending on the sea conditions. Potistika Beach, located a little farther along the coast, is even more impressive with its vast scale and dramatic landscape. These are places that are not meant to be conquered, but experienced—with respect and appreciation.
At one of the two beaches, we will enjoy a longer break for swimming, recovery, and discussion of the day's route. Lunch will be at a beachfront tavern, after which, depending on the conditions, we paddle back along the same route.
After finishing the paddling, we drive high into the mountains to the village of Argalasti, where we conclude the day with dinner at a traditional tavern renowned for its local cuisine. The village's stone architecture and peaceful atmosphere provide the perfect contrast to the intensity of the day spent on the water.

Training in the Volos Bay and Departure
We gather by the kayaks at 09:00. This is our final day and is dedicated to a short, focused paddling session and practical training in the bay. Today's training includes:
Kayak Fundamentals and Control
✅ proper entry and exit from a kayak at the shoreline and in shallow water;
✅ efficient forward and backward paddling with correct body position;
✅ stopping techniques and controlled speed reduction;
✅ course correction and changing direction.
Maneuvering and Stability
✅ sideways paddling (draw stroke);
✅ maintaining stability using low brace and high brace techniques;
✅ basic techniques for preventing capsizing.
Rescue Techniques
✅ self-rescue – re-entering the kayak after capsizing;
✅ assisted rescue – helping another kayaker.
The training is conducted primarily in single sea kayaks, allowing each technique to be practiced realistically, with proper dynamics and maximum safety.
Those who prefer not to participate in the practical exercises may observe from a kayak or remain on the beach.
Packing Up and Departure
At 11:00 we return to the campsite. Together we clean the equipment, organize the gear, and load the kayaks onto the trailers.
Around 14:00 we depart for Bulgaria.
Expected arrival in front of Vasil Levski Stadium in Sofia – around 23:00.
Circumnavigation of Trikeri Island and Pythou Island
If sea conditions along the eastern coast are unsuitable for kayaking on any of the planned days, we switch to an alternative route in more sheltered waters—a circumnavigation of Trikeri and Πυθού (Pythou) Islands, located in the calm bay opposite southern Pelion.
Trikeri is a small, inhabited, and remarkably authentic island that has preserved the spirit of the old fishing communities. Its stone houses, small harbor, and absence of cars create the feeling of a place where time has stood still. Its coastline alternates between pebble beaches, secluded coves, and crystal-clear waters, making it ideal for relaxed paddling and snorkeling.
Πυθού (Pythou) Island, located close to Trikeri, is completely uninhabited and even wilder. It impresses with its rugged landscape, pristine waters, and complete lack of human presence. It is a place that can truly be appreciated only from the sea—defined by silence, clarity, and complete harmony with nature.
We organize a transfer to Alopoporos Harbor, where we unload the kayaks and launch towards Trikeri Island. From the very first paddle strokes, we enter a sheltered stretch of water protected from wind and waves, making it ideal for a rewarding day on the sea.
During the circumnavigation, we stop at three wild beaches located along the shores of the two islands. These breaks are planned for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying the crystal-clear waters and peaceful atmosphere that characterize this beautiful area.
The route concludes at the harbor of Trikeri Island, where we stop at one of the local taverns. Here, the pace slows down and the focus shifts to authentic Greek cuisine and the unique atmosphere of a place that has preserved its traditional character far from mass tourism.
In the evening, we return to Milina, where we finish the day with dinner at a traditional tavern. The maritime atmosphere, simple local dishes, and the peaceful rhythm of the village provide the perfect ending to another memorable day along the Pelion coast.
Paddling distance for the day: approximately 15 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 3 out of 4
