The Thassos sea kayaking adventure is an expedition-style journey around one of the most diverse and spectacular coastlines in the Northern Aegean Sea. Over the course of several days, we follow the island's true shoreline, with each day revealing a different side of Thassos—from long golden beaches and shallow lagoons to wild bays, hidden sandy coves, sea caves, and remarkable rock formations.

Paddling is much more than simply covering distance—it is the way we truly experience the island. We enter narrow sea caves, paddle beneath towering cliffs, rest on beaches with no road access, and land in places that can only be reached from the sea. The contrast between the turquoise waters, brilliant white marble coastline, green hillsides, and the open sea creates the feeling of constantly moving between wilderness and beauty.

Our overnight stays are an essential part of the experience—either camping under the stars on the beach or at carefully selected campsites close to the sea, enjoying dinner by the water and the unmistakable feeling of complete freedom. Along the route, we encounter both untouched wilderness and occasional touches of island life—beach bars, traditional taverns, and small coastal villages where we can relax, recharge, and enjoy the local atmosphere.

This adventure is designed for those seeking more than an ordinary holiday—for people looking for movement, the sea, challenge, and unforgettable experiences. Thassos reveals itself gradually, with every paddle stroke, leaving you with the feeling that you have explored the island in a way that very few people ever do—from the water, following the rhythm of the waves.

Program:

From Sofia to the First Night Under the Stars of Thassos

We meet at 00:30 in front of Vasil Levski Stadium, and at 01:00 we depart for Greece.

On the way, we make a short stop in the Kresna area—time for pastries, coffee, and stocking up on water and supplies before continuing towards Keramoti.

Early in the morning, we arrive and board the first available ferry to the island of Thassos.

After disembarking, we take a short break before heading to Paralia Pachi—a wide, peaceful sandy beach on the western coast of the island. The beach is famous for its fine sand, shallow waters, and ideal conditions for our first contact with the sea. Here we unload the equipment, conduct a detailed safety briefing, prepare the kayaks, organize our gear, and launch onto the water—the expedition begins.

Paralia Pachi → Papias Beach

Our first stop is Papias Beach—a small, charming beach with crystal-clear water and a more secluded atmosphere. The area offers natural shade and excellent underwater visibility, making it the perfect place for a short break, a swim, and easing into the rhythm of the day.

Papias → Limenas Beach

From there, we carefully cross the ferry channel and paddle towards Limenas, the capital of the island. Here we stop for lunch and a short rest. The contrast between the lively harbor and the peaceful coastline we have just paddled along perfectly illustrates why experiencing Thassos from the sea is so unique.

Limenas → Makryammos Beach

We continue towards Makryammos Beach—a spacious sandy beach surrounded by pine forests and exceptionally calm, shallow waters. It is an ideal place for a longer break, offering soft sand, natural shade, and crystal-clear sea that immediately immerses us in the relaxed rhythm of island life.

Makryammos → Saliara Beach

From here, we paddle towards Saliara Beach, also known as Marble Beach. This is one of the island's most iconic locations, famous for its dazzling white marble pebbles, turquoise waters, and the striking contrast between the brilliant white shoreline and the deep blue sea. Here we swim, relax, and enjoy one of the most photogenic stops of the entire expedition.

This is also the final destination of today's route.

We prepare dinner on the beach and spend our first night camping beneath the stars.

Saliara → Golden Beach

The day concludes at Golden Beach—the longest and one of the most beautiful sandy beaches on Thassos. Its wide golden shoreline gently meets the sea, framed by the island's impressive mountain landscape. Our first night of the expedition is peaceful and unforgettable—the sound of the waves, the salty sea air, and the feeling that the greatest part of the adventure is still ahead.

Paddling distance for the day: 15 km

Difficulty level according to distance: 3 out of 4

From the Marble Shores to the Open Sea of Thassos

After breakfast and coffee, we pack our gear and prepare the kayaks for another full day on the water. We depart from Saliara Beach, leaving behind the dazzling white marble shoreline and its turquoise waters.

Saliara → Golden Beach

Our first stop is Golden Beach—the longest and one of the most beautiful sandy beaches on the island. A wide stretch of golden sand gently slopes into the sea, framed by the impressive mountainous landscape of Thassos. The water here is generally calm, making it the perfect place for a longer break, swimming, and recharging before the next stage of the journey.

Golden Beach → Paradise Beach

We continue south towards Paradise Beach, one of the most famous and picturesque places on Thassos. The beach lies within a wide open bay with fine golden sand and characteristic shallow waters, where gentle waves often create beautiful patterns along the shoreline. Here, the sea constantly changes color, from light blue to vivid turquoise, while the surrounding hills create an unforgettable backdrop.

Here we take our lunch break, with plenty of time for swimming, relaxing, and enjoying one of the island's most iconic beaches.

Paradise → Agios Ioannis Beach

In the afternoon, we continue towards Agios Ioannis Beach, where we will have dinner and spend the night. This peaceful, spacious beach features fine sand and a gently sloping seabed. Open to the sea, it offers a wonderful feeling of space and fresh air, while the water is often exceptionally clear, especially during the late afternoon and evening. It is the perfect place to conclude a long day of paddling and spend another unforgettable night beneath the stars.

We end the day in complete tranquility—with dinner on the beach, the sound of the waves, and another night when the island feels entirely our own.

Paddling distance for the day: 22 km

Difficulty level according to distance: 4 out of 4

Giola, Hidden Bays, and the Southern Rhythm of Thassos

After breakfast and our morning coffee, we prepare the kayaks and continue our expedition along the eastern coastline of Thassos. Today is one of the most scenic days of the entire journey—a combination of long beaches, secluded bays, dramatic rock formations, and one of the island's most iconic natural landmarks.

Agios Ioannis Beach → Thymonia Beach

We depart from Agios Ioannis Beach and, after a relaxed paddle along the open coastline, arrive at Thymonia Beach. This is a long, relatively untouched beach with fine pebbles and the characteristic turquoise waters of the Aegean. The area remains largely undeveloped, preserving its natural beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and pristine sea. Here we stop for a short break, swimming, and photographs.

Thymonia → Livadi Beach and the Natural Pool of Giola

After our short break, we continue to Livadi Beach—the starting point for one of Thassos' most famous natural attractions: Giola.

Once we land on the beach, the group splits into two.

Those who wish continue on foot to Giola to admire the spectacular natural rock pool and, if they choose, make the island's famous jump into its crystal-clear waters.

The rest of the group remains at Livadi Beach, enjoying swimming, relaxation, and the peaceful seaside atmosphere.

After about an hour, we regroup and continue our journey together.

Livadi → Psili Ammos Beach

Our next major stop is Psili Ammos Beach—one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in southeastern Thassos. Its name means "fine sand," perfectly describing its soft shoreline, shallow waters, and peaceful atmosphere. Here we enjoy a longer break for lunch, swimming, and relaxation.

Sea Cave – A True Kayaking Adventure

The afternoon brings another highlight—a narrow sea cave just wide enough for a single kayak. We enter one by one, carefully and with full concentration. The cave extends for more than 40 meters, and as we paddle deeper inside, the daylight gradually fades, creating an unforgettable atmosphere of silence, cool air, and pure adventure. It is one of those moments that remains with you long after the expedition ends.

End of the Day – Camping Pefkari

In the late afternoon, we head towards Camping Pefkari, where we will have dinner and spend the night. This is our first campsite after two days of wild camping—a welcome opportunity to enjoy a few extra comforts. The beach in front of the campsite is wide, with fine sand and a gently sloping seabed, making it the perfect place to relax, unwind, and share stories after a long day on the water.

🌅 The day ends with a sense of fulfillment—wild places, iconic scenery, and yet another part of Thassos experienced from a perspective that very few people ever enjoy.

Camping Pefkari accommodation fee:

– €15 per person per night. Those who prefer may also camp freely on the beach.

More information about Camping Pefkari is available here: https://www.camping-pefkari.gr/. The campsite also offers hotel accommodation.

Paddling distance for the day: 22 km

Difficulty level according to distance: 4 out of 4

Sea Caves, Hidden Beaches, and a Seaside Finale

After breakfast, we pack up our gear and depart from Pefkari, continuing along the southern coast of Thassos—a gentler, greener, and remarkably diverse section of the island. Our first stop is Limenaria, the second-largest town on Thassos.

Here, a picturesque harbor, a long sandy beach, and distinctive architecture come together to create one of the island's most attractive seaside towns. Rising above the town is the iconic Palataki building—a reminder of Thassos' mining heritage and one of the area's most recognizable landmarks.

In Limenaria, we replenish our food and water supplies and enjoy a short break before entering the next wild section of the route.

Paddling Through Trypiti Cave

Our next highlight is one of the most fascinating natural formations on the island—Trypiti Cave.

We paddle into the cave by kayak and, after a short yet unforgettable passage, emerge directly onto a small hidden sandy beach enclosed by towering cliffs. The location is exceptionally photogenic and gives the feeling of discovering a secret place accessible only from the sea—one of those moments that makes sea kayaking truly unforgettable.

From there, we continue towards Secret Beach—a small, secluded beach hidden between high cliffs and difficult to reach by land.

The beach is peaceful, wild, and almost deserted, with crystal-clear water and a wonderful feeling of complete isolation. Here we enjoy a longer stop for lunch, swimming, snorkeling, and simply disconnecting from everything else.

Afternoon Paddle to Platanes Beach

In the afternoon, we continue towards Platanes Beach—a quiet and welcoming beach surrounded by lush greenery and shady trees. With its soft sand and peaceful atmosphere, it provides the perfect setting for a relaxed end to the day's paddling.

Overnight Stay and Dinner – Camping Dedalos

Tonight we stay and have dinner at Camping Dedalos, a well-maintained campsite located directly beside the sea.

The campsite offers flat grassy areas for tents, natural shade provided by mature trees, and a peaceful environment that is ideal for recovering after another long day on the water. Dinner by the sea is the perfect conclusion to another day filled with exploration.

🌅 The day ends slowly and peacefully—with the fresh sea breeze, the sound of the waves, and the feeling that southern Thassos has revealed another part of its hidden beauty.

Camping Dedalos accommodation fee:

– €15 per person per night. Those who prefer may also camp freely on the beach.

Paddling distance for the day: 20 km

Difficulty level according to distance: 4 out of 4

Completing the Circumnavigation and the Journey Home

We wake up at Camping Dedalos and, after a relaxed breakfast, prepare for the final, shorter stage of our sea kayaking adventure.

We set off across the sea towards Paralia Pachi, where we symbolically complete the full circumnavigation of Thassos.

Today's paddle is intentionally shorter, giving us time to enjoy the final moments on the water, take our last paddle strokes in rhythm with the sea, and say a peaceful farewell to the island.

After landing:

– together we pack up and clean all the equipment

– wash the kayaks and load them onto the trailers

– take a few moments to reflect on the past days, the routes we paddled, and the unforgettable memories we will take home with us

Afterwards, we head to the ferry and cross back to the mainland before beginning our journey to Sofia.

Expected arrival in front of Vasil Levski Stadium – around 22:00.

With this, our sea kayaking expedition around Thassos comes to an end—with salt on our skin, the sea still in our hair, and the feeling that we have experienced the island in the most authentic way possible—from the water.

Paddling distance for the day: 12 km

Difficulty level according to distance: 2 out of 4

🌊 Kayak Program Difficulty Classification

To make things clear for every participant, our programs are categorized as follows:

🔹 Intro – Introduction to Kayaking (1 of 4)

Programs held on lakes, reservoirs, and other so-called calm waters. Suitable for people with no prior experience who want to take their first steps in kayaking and feel the boat and movement on water in a fully controlled environment.

🔹 Beginners (2 of 4)

Programs for people with little or initial experience. A high level of physical endurance is not required, but participants should be able to spend at least one hour in the kayak. The focus is on adapting to the sea, basic technique, and building confidence on the water.

🔹 Intermediate (3 of 4)

Good physical endurance and basic experience in sea kayaking are required. Participants should be able to paddle for more than one hour without stopping, including in conditions with wind up to 3 bft. These programs include longer crossings and more dynamic conditions.

🔹 Advanced (4 of 4)

Programs for paddlers with a high level of personal paddling skills. Solid boat control, confidence in varied sea conditions, and the ability to handle challenges of open water independently are expected.

🌊 Summary

The difficulty level of sea kayak trips is a dynamic assessment. It depends on the sea, the route, and the people in the group. A well-planned route is not simply “easy” or “hard,” but appropriate for the specific experience and the specific participants.

🚣‍♂️ Dopamine Team – where difficulty is not a barrier, but part of the experience.

🌊 How the Difficulty Level of a Sea Kayak Trip Is Determined

The difficulty of a sea kayak trip is not defined only by the distance covered. It is a complex evaluation that combines natural, technical, and human factors. This combination is what makes each route unique and requires professional planning.

When we assess the difficulty of kayak programs, we take into account water conditions, paddling duration, required skills, and the level of participant self-reliance.

1. Distance and Daily Load

Distance remains a basic indicator, but it is always considered in context. A short route in open sea can be significantly more demanding than a long paddle along a sheltered coastline. Consecutive days of paddling are also important, as accumulated fatigue greatly affects overall difficulty.

2. Sea Conditions

This is the key factor in sea kayaking. Wind strength and direction, wave height and period, as well as currents and reflections from rocky shores are all evaluated. The same distance in calm water versus side wind and swell can be a completely different experience.

3. Route Type

Routes vary greatly in character – from sheltered coastal sections, through open crossings between capes and islands, to long stretches without access to shore. The longer a section is exposed to open sea, the higher the difficulty.

4. Technical Requirements

Difficulty increases when a route requires precise kayak control in waves, handling side and head winds, stability in surf, and safe landings on different types of shoreline. Here the challenge goes beyond physical endurance and into real paddling skills.

5. Navigation and Decision-Making

More complex trips involve coastal navigation, planning around weather windows, and making decisions in real time. Navigation adds mental load and requires experience, focus, and calm judgment.

6. Self-Reliance and Logistics

The farther a route is from civilization, the higher the difficulty. Trips with limited beach access, no easy evacuation, and the need for independent management of equipment and resources require serious preparation.
