The Via Ferrata (Latin: railway) is a safe climbing route equipped with permanent metal structures such as ladders, steps, cables, bridges, etc. This type of route allows safe traversing by well-prepared hikers who do not have their own equipment or have more basic knowledge and skills in rock climbing. Such routes are also accessible to less experienced hikers who are familiar with basic climbing safety techniques and are accompanied by an experienced guide.
The construction of a belayed route with auxiliary rail facilities has increased accessibility to the most scenic areas of the canyon without compromising existing climbing routes and hiking trails. Worldwide experience has shown that it is quite possible for routes of different difficulty and access levels to coexist within the same rock phenomenon.
Via Ferrata "Malyovitsa" is located in the Malyovitsa section of Rila near the hut of the same name.
It starts at 2042 m above sea level and ends on the ridge at 2240 m above sea level.
The main length is about 360 m. and passes through several rock thresholds of varying difficulty, which are connected with easier terrain. The metal belay rope is fixed and continuous for the entire length of the route. On the difficult sections steps are installed for belaying, stepping and catching.
The approach from the hut to the start is 15 min. The ascent time is from 1,30 ÷ 3,00 hours depending on the condition of the participants.
Crossing the Via Ferrata is an extreme activity that requires certain skills, physical qualities and appropriate equipment. By climbing the route you will get the opportunity to experience unforgettable moments. You will be able to see the Malyovitsa and Urdina valleys and the peaks in the area from the climbers' angle and experience emotions that otherwise remain inaccessible to people who do not practice rock climbing and mountaineering.
