Kayak adventure along the western coast of Corfu
Corfu does not reveal itself all at once. The island requires time, movement, and a perspective from the sea.
Our kayak adventure is focused on the wild and dramatic western coastline of Corfu – a place of steep limestone cliffs, sea caves, arches, narrow passages, and beaches accessible only by water.
Here the Ionian Sea is stronger, deeper, and more alive. The coastal formations are raw and impressive, and the light changes the colors of the rocks and the water throughout the day. This is Corfu without a filter – authentic, wild, and truly maritime.

CORFU – THE WESTERN FACE OF THE ISLAND
Sea kayak adventure along the wild western coastline
Corfu has two faces.
One is familiar – beaches, towns, tavernas.
The other is the western coast – raw, rugged, rocky, and completely different when experienced from the water.
This kayak adventure is focused exactly there.
We paddle along the wildest and most dramatic part of the island, where limestone cliffs plunge steeply into the sea, caves open directly from the waves, and beaches often have no road – only an entrance from the water.
We start gently, with training and adaptation around Sidari.
Then, day by day, we move deeper along the western coastline – capes, arches, sea caves, narrow passages, rocky labyrinths, and beaches that look unreal even from a kayak.
The finale is not accidental.
After the wild sea, the adventure ends in Kerkyra – a city with millennia of history, fortresses, stone, and culture. The contrast between raw nature and human history closes the experience in a way that lingers long after the final paddle stroke.
This is not a tour.
This is movement on the sea, with rhythm, focus, and freedom.
Program:
First paddle strokes near Sidari
We arrive early in the morning in Igoumenitsa and take the ferry to the island of Corfu. We dock at the port of Kerkyra – the island’s capital – and then continue to Paleokastritsa, where we settle into the campsite. After a short rest, we transfer north to the coastal village of Sidari.
On the beach in Sidari, we conduct a detailed briefing. Together, we carry the kayaks, distribute the equipment, and launch the boats into the water. The day is planned as an introductory and training day – to ease smoothly into the rhythm of the sea and the group.
Beginners remain in the sheltered bay of Sidari, where they take their first steps in sea kayaking: boat control, basic paddling techniques, and working with the sea in calm conditions.
More advanced paddlers head to the right of Sidari for a first exploration of the coastline – limestone rock formations, small coves, and open sections that create a sense of space and movement.
In the afternoon, we regroup and return with the first kilometers behind us. In the early evening, there is time for a walk around Sidari and dinner at a local taverna – a calm end to the first day and preparation for the more dynamic routes ahead.
The first day sets the rhythm – unhurried, with a focus on technique, the sea, and the team. The real adventure is just beginning.
Paddling distance for the day: approximately 8 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 2 out of 4
The northern face of Corfu – cliffs, legends, and golden beaches
Once again, we set off from the campsite toward Sidari – the place where the northern coastline of Corfu begins to reveal its true character. Here, the limestone cliffs are soft to the touch yet dramatic in form, and the sea is crystal clear, changing its color with every movement of the sun.
🌊 Canal d’Amour – The Channel of Love
Our first paddle strokes take us through the famous Canal d’Amour – a labyrinth of limestone cliffs, natural arches, and narrow sea passages. The place is wrapped in legends: it is said that a couple who swims through the channel together will remain forever connected. We pass through by kayak – slowly and calmly, with time for photos and swimming in the transparent water.
Cape Drastis – the raw beauty of Corfu
We continue westward and reach Cape Drastis – one of the most spectacular places on the island. Here, the cliffs rise in layers shaped like enormous white waves, while the sea beneath them is deep and intensely blue. We stop for a break, photos, and a short swim. This is a place that is felt – not just seen.
Loggas Beach – the sunsets of the north
Next comes a break at Loggas Beach – known for its high clay cliffs and endless views of the Ionian Sea. The beach is wild and open, and the sense of space is complete. Here we take a breath before lunch.
Agios Stefanos Beach – lunch and calm
Our lunch is at Agios Stefanos Beach (Avliotes) – a long sandy beach with a relaxed atmosphere, shallow waters, and excellent tavernas. An ideal place to recharge, enjoy a cold drink, and take a short walk along the shore.
Cape Kefali – the open sea
In the afternoon, we round Cape Kefali – an open sea section where the power of the Ionian Sea can truly be felt. This is one of those moments when paddling brings pure enjoyment – rhythm, movement, and open space.
Paralia Arillas – golden sand and relaxation
The day ends at Arillas Beach – a wide golden beach surrounded by hills and greenery. Here the sea is calm, and the atmosphere is laid-back. We come out of the water, gather the kayaks, and let the sea “settle” within us.
Paddling distance for the day: approximately 14 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 3 out of 4
Porto Timoni, fortresses and caves – the heart of western Corfu
We set off early from Paralia Arillas, when the sea is at its calmest and the light highlights the soft lines of the western coast. An exceptionally full day lies ahead – one of those that stays in your mind for a long time.
The pirate beach at Porto Timoni
Our first stop is the legendary Porto Timoni – a double bay separated by a narrow isthmus, surrounded by steep slopes. From the water, the place looks even more impressive: two contrasting sea colors, rocky walls, and a sense of complete isolation. Known as the “pirate beach,” Porto Timoni is a symbol of wild Corfu.
Sheep Rock – the guardian rock
Next comes rounding Sheep Rock – a solitary rock formation rising directly from the sea. It serves as a natural landmark and marks the end of the wildest section of the route. We stop for photos and a short break.
The small cave and the Arc of Porto Timoni
Along the way, a small sea cave awaits us – narrow, yet deep enough to feel the coolness and the echo of the water. Shortly after, we pass by the Arc of Porto Timoni – a natural stone arch carved by the waves, one of the most photogenic formations along this coast.
Agios Georgios Beach – lunch and open space
We have lunch at Agios Georgios Beach (North) – a long, wide beach with fine sand and a gently sloping, safe seabed. The place is open to the sea, with a sense of space and calm – ideal for a longer break and recharging.
Mikro Kastelli & Kastelli Beach
After lunch, we pass by Mikro Kastelli Beach – a small, quiet beach nestled beneath the cliffs – and stop for a break at Kastelli Beach. Above us, high on the rocky ridge, rises the Byzantine fortress Angelokastro – one of the most iconic fortresses of Corfu, seen majestically from the sea.
The monastery in Paleokastritsa
We continue along the coast and observe from the water the Holy Monastery of the Virgin Mary at Paleokastritsa – perched high above the sea, amid greenery and sheer cliffs. The view from below reveals just how dramatically this place is positioned.
Nausika’s Cave and the finale
We enter Nausika’s Cave – a sea cave with an astonishing play of light and color that quite literally takes your breath away. After that, we land at Agios Spiridon Beach, where our day comes to an end – tired, but energized and completely satisfied.
An exceptionally rich day – caves, arches, fortresses, and some of the most spectacular views of Corfu, seen the way few people ever see them: from sea level.
Paddling distance for the day: approximately 15 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 3 out of 4
Caves, turquoise waters, and hidden beaches of Paleokastritsa
Western Corfu – a day for true connoisseurs
Today we allow ourselves a slightly more relaxed morning. Before entering the water, we will visit Corfu Aquarium – located high above the bay of Paleokastritsa. From here, panoramic views open toward the western coast, and the aquarium itself offers a good insight into the underwater world we are about to paddle through – reefs, rocks, and marine life typical of the Ionian Sea.
Starting from Agios Spiridon Beach
From this small, sheltered beach we launch into the water. The spot is preferred as a starting point for kayak routes due to its calm conditions and direct access to the caves of Paleokastritsa.
👁 The Blue Eye Cave
Our first destination is the Blue Eye Cave – a sea cave famous for the way light enters through an underwater opening, creating the illusion of a “blue eye” in the depths.
The colors here range from deep blue to bright turquoise, depending on the sun and sea conditions. We enter carefully, observe the reflections, and feel the characteristic coolness of the caves along this coast.
Rovinia Beach
After the cave, we land at Rovinia – one of the most beautiful beaches in the area.
The beach is hidden between high cliffs and lush vegetation, with white pebbles and exceptionally clear water. Access by land is difficult, which keeps it much quieter than the popular beaches. An ideal spot for swimming and a short break.
Cave of Love
We continue toward the Cave of Love – one of the smaller yet very photogenic sea caves in the area. Its name comes from its shape and the way the light softens the inner contours. This is a typical place where the sea has sculpted the rock gently and smoothly, creating an intimate atmosphere.
Limni Beach Glyko
Next comes one of the most interesting spots of the day. Limni Beach Glyko represents a narrow rocky passage between two bays, connecting two different bodies of water.
Here we exit the water, briefly carry the kayaks over land, and continue on the other side. The place is wild, raw, and deeply impressive – a typical example of the fragmented relief of western Corfu.
Kolias Beach
After the carry, we reach Kolias Beach – a small, lesser-visited beach with pebbles and deep, clean water.
We stop here for a short break, swimming, and regrouping before the next cave.
Cave Liniodoros Nest
Another sea cave, lesser known and more rugged.
It is characterized by its irregular shapes and darker interior. Entering requires attention and calm – exactly the kind of places that make sea kayaking so special.
Paradise Beach (Chomi Beach)
Shortly after the cave, we reach Paradise Beach, also known as Chomi Beach. This is one of the most inaccessible and wild beaches of Corfu – surrounded by high cliffs, without land access, and reachable almost entirely by sea. The white pebbles and deep blue water make the place exceptionally photogenic and memorable.
Stelari Beach
At Stelari Beach, we take a longer break for lunch.
The beach is a mix of pebbles and rocky platforms, with crystal-clear water and good conditions for snorkeling. The place is calm and suitable for recovery before the final section.
Return route to Agios Spiridon
In the afternoon, we head back along the now-familiar route. The sea looks different in the reverse light, and the caves and cliffs reveal new details.
The finish is once again at Agios Spiridon Beach, where we conclude one of the most intense and diverse days of the adventure.
After a short break, we pack and load the kayaks, then return them to the campsite. The marine part of the day ends, but the experience continues on land.
We head toward the island’s capital, where we will have time for a walk and exploration of the city – narrow streets, fortress walls, seaside promenades, and that distinctive Corfu atmosphere that is felt most strongly in the evening.
We end the day with dinner in a traditional tavern, sharing impressions from an exceptionally rich day on the water and along the shores of Corfu.
Paddling distance for the day: ~14 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 3–4
This day is a textbook example of western Corfu – caves, passages, hidden beaches, and light that constantly transforms the sea. A day that is not simply “covered,” but truly experienced.
We gather at 9:00 and all together pack the equipment, wash and load the kayaks onto the trailers.
After that, we depart by ferry toward Igoumenitsa.
We will stop for a late lunch or early dinner, after which we head back to Bulgaria.
The expected arrival in front of “Vasil Levski” Stadium is around 24:00.
