Zakynthos is an island that feels as if it were created specifically for sea kayaking. Sheer limestone cliffs, milky-turquoise waters, deep sea caves, and isolated beaches shape a coastline that reveals its true beauty only from the sea.
This five-day kayak adventure is organized with a base camp at a campsite, from which we set out each day on different kayak routes and return in the evening. This format allows for an in-depth exploration of the island without relocating the camp, combining active days on the water with comfort, rest, and a relaxed atmosphere.
The routes are carefully selected to showcase the most impressive parts of Zakynthos – wild western coastlines, sea caves, natural stone arches, rocky amphitheaters, and beaches accessible only by kayak. Each day offers a different direction and character of paddling, with time for swimming, snorkeling, and fully enjoying the surrounding environment.
This is not a race, but a balanced sea journey where the rhythm is set by the sea, the light, and the place itself. It is suitable both for participants with intermediate experience and for motivated beginners who want to experience true sea kayaking in one of the most beautiful destinations in the Ionian Sea.
Zakynthos does not impress loudly – it captivates gradually. With every paddle stroke, with every new cave, with every stop at a wild beach. It is an island that stays with you long after you leave it.
Program:
On the evening of 14.07.2026, the meeting is at 20:00 in front of “Vasil Levski” Stadium, Sofia, and we depart at 20:30.
In the morning we arrive in the town of Kyllini, from where we take a ferry transfer to the island of Zakynthos. After disembarking, we head to Zante Campsite, where we settle in. Together we unload the camping equipment, set up the camp, and take time to rest after the journey.
In the afternoon, we organize a transfer to Xigia Beach – one of the most unique natural places on the island. Xigia is known as the natural “SPA beach” of Zakynthos. Small, picturesque, and nestled between limestone cliffs, it impresses with its milky-blue water and distinctive mineral composition.
Near the beach, inside one of the sea caves, there is a natural sulfur spring that flows directly into the sea. This gives the water its characteristic color and mild scent, as well as the properties for which the place is popular for relaxation and recovery. Swimming here is a truly unique experience and a perfect start to our kayak adventure on the island.
The evening is planned as free time. We return to the campsite for dinner and rest. There will be an opportunity to shop for food or dine at one of the nearby taverns, depending on individual preferences.
Keri, Marathonisi and the cave labyrinths of southern Zakynthos
On this day we organize a transfer to the southern part of the island – Keri Beach. Upon arrival, we unload the kayaks, distribute the equipment, and conduct a detailed briefing about the route and conditions.
After the preparation, we launch the kayaks and paddle towards Marathonisi Island – also known as the “Turtle Island.” There we make our first stop. During the visit, we will explore several sea caves and natural rock arches shaped by waves and time – some of the most picturesque spots in the area.
We then continue to the rock arch at Cape Marathia, where we take a longer break for lunch and rest, with views over the open Ionian Sea.
After the break, we head back towards Keri, but along a different route. This marks the most exciting part of the day – a step-by-step exploration of the coastline. We will pass through a series of cave tunnels and natural rock labyrinths, in some places entering from one side of the rock and exiting from the other. This is a true sea adventure, revealing Zakynthos in its wildest and most impressive form.
At the end of the day, we paddle back to the port of Keri, and from there take a transfer back to the campsite – energized by emotions and unforgettable views.
Important: There are no restaurants or taverns along the route for the day, so everyone must carry enough water and food for the entire day.
The evening is free – dinner and rest at the campsite or a visit to a tavern, depending on the participants’ preferences.
Paddling distance for the day: 15 km.
Difficulty level according to distance: 3 out of 4.
The Blue Caves of Zakynthos
We organize a transfer to Agios Nikolaos Beach, where our sea adventure for the day begins. After a short preparation, we launch the kayaks and head towards the so-called Blue Caves – one of the most impressive and iconic places on Zakynthos.
The Blue Caves are located along the northwestern coastline of the island and are accessible only by sea. The route to them passes by a stunning sequence of rock arches, caves, and sheer limestone cliffs, silently embraced by the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea. This is a route that leaves a lasting impression – both because of its scale and the feeling of wild, untouched coastline.
Upon reaching the Blue Caves, a longer break for lunch is planned. The area consists of a developed rocky formation with a tavern located at its highest point, as well as natural platforms suitable for jumping into the water from various heights.
If there is swell or rough sea conditions, it may not be possible to land on the rocky formation for lunch, therefore each participant must carry their own food and sufficient water for the day.
After lunch and rest, we paddle back towards Agios Nikolaos. The day ends with a transfer back to the campsite.
The evening is free – dinner and rest at the campsite or a visit to a nearby tavern, depending on the participants’ preferences.
Paddling distance for the day: approximately 8 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 3 out of 4
Today we face a real challenge.
After breakfast, we head towards Porto Vromi Bay – from here lies the shortest and most direct kayak approach to Navagio Beach. Whether we will be able to reach it by paddling depends entirely on the weather conditions and the state of the sea.
The route to Navagio is one of the most epic experiences sea kayaking can offer. We will enjoy some of the most majestic views imaginable from the water – towering cliffs rising more than 300 meters above us, while we remain small and humbled at their base. The experience is truly unique and stays with you forever.
Due to the risk of rockfalls, landing on Navagio Beach itself is prohibited. For this reason, we will admire the beach and the shipwreck remains from the water, after which we will retreat to a nearby beach for a break.
On this day as well, there are no taverns or facilities along the route, so each participant must carry enough food and water.
As a reward, on the way back to the campsite we will have dinner at one of the best taverns in the region – a well-deserved ending to an intense day.
The evening is again free. We return to the campsite for rest and recovery.
Attention:
If there is swell and it is not possible to reach the beach by kayak, we will visit the shipwreck beach by motor boats, if sea conditions allow, or we will climb to the panoramic viewpoint to see it from above. For paddling, an alternative route will be chosen, adapted to the conditions.
Paddling distance for the day: approximately 15 km
Difficulty level according to distance: 4 out of 4
We gather at 09:00 and together pack the equipment, wash and load the kayaks onto the trailers, after which we head towards the capital. If we are efficient with packing, we will have around 2 hours before departure with the ferry for sightseeing and a short walk.
After that, we take the ferry to the mainland and begin our journey back to Bulgaria.
The expected arrival in front of “Vasil Levski” National Stadium in Sofia is after midnight.
We leave Zakynthos behind, but the sea, the cliffs, and those moments of silence between paddle strokes will stay with us for a long time – as a memory of a true sea kayaking adventure.
The campsite is located in close proximity to the island’s capital. If desired, any participant may skip one of the kayaking programs and choose an alternative activity, including attractions, beaches, or sightseeing around the island.
